You’ve Got To Try A Little Kindness

The quality of being friendly, generous and considerate.

As the sun was setting on 2016, I decided to make a concerted effort to live by the theme of ‘kindness’ in 2017.  This was partly born of a sense of horror at the seemingly growing amount of violence in the world and despair at the intolerance of some of the world’s leaders.

During the year, when opportunities presented to choose to act kindly, I would sometimes sing in my mind the words of a song that my dear old dad used to play – ”You’ve got to try a little kindness, just show a little kindness!”

Small acts – allowing a car into traffic, buying a ‘pay it forward’ coffee, helping a stallholder pack down their gazebo, fully listening, giving a lift, really contributed to my sense of wellbeing.   The surprising lesson that revealed itself, however,  was that it also contributed to my sense of purpose.

Upon reflecting on the act of kindness, I conclude that it really is self perpetuating and that those on the receiving end of kind acts are likely to be more kind to others.  I find it thrilling and exciting that you  have no way of knowing how big the ripple created from an act of kindness will be.  A smile or kind word for a stranger in crisis could quite possibly save a life.  By purposely living in his way we really can change the world.

Wishing you a very kind-hearted 2018 x
